Canceling a game

Had to cancel a game tonight. Everybody was tired and there was only three of us. It made sense, but it still felt a little deflating.

I wonder what other people do in order to avoid canceling games.

What do you do? Are there seasons you avoid or black out? Do you keep players on retainer or keep a large group? Maybe you have back-up GMs!
